Shoot 1 Interview – Editing

Screen Shot 2019-05-13 at 13.11.38.png

Firstly i started off by Placing all clips into the timeline and then putting them all together to create a rough draft. Whilst i was doing this i was also sinking up the audio recording to the clips so that i have better audio. (the audio dialogue is the green boxes underneath the clips)

I also added some markers where i know where my effects need to be placed. This is to help me find where i need to place them easily without sifting through the timeline.

I also had a safety clip where if anything went wrong in the first few takes i have a good take that i can use to replace the bad take ( what you can see on the left of the time line)

The last step i did in this screen shot was a basic log colour correction. This is to flatten out all the clips so that i can easily change the colours throughout the project without doing each clip individually.

Here i changed the colour theme to a bit darker and more realistic because this is a good way to portray comedy.

I then added sound effects to make everything feel more real and more like a short film. This is just a basic edited version but for now it works. I now need to film and edit my action sequences and place them in where the markers are.

Audio

From my reception theory blog i wanted to show the audience that they went back in time thought the use of sound.I used a warping sound effect here because it was the closest thing i could film to a travelling sound. I also added bass sound and pulsing to drag this out, making us think that the device he used to go back in time is powering down.

Problem

A problem that i faced when i just finished my interview segment is that i have broken the 180 degree rule.

What is the 180 degree rule:

”The 180degree rule is a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another. When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle.”

In my project I realized that in the interview the camera angles are different and should be the same both side. but they weren’t. I tried flipping one side of the clips around but it didn’t work. So I make the shots have the same focal point and it kinda works. You’re eyes aren’t looking around trying to find the characters, I showed my teacher and he said it works in a weird way. So I decided to keep it like this and export it as a draft.

Problem! Matching all the shots – Colour Correction

After some planning i realized my action sequences and interview segment are going to have different colours and they arnt going to match when i put them together.

This video explains a lot about colour correction. Once i have shot all my clips and put them into my timeline I am going to follow this tutorial again and match all my clips. I am also going to make a draft edit with no effects so that I can edit those effects separately in after effects. I am going to use this im my interview and my imagination sequences (once i get to them) because colour correction can be used in all areas of my filming. Not just my interview.

Shoot 1 Interview – Shot list

Shot List – Interview

This was created because of my story board blog and also used the camera angles from my camera techniques blog. I am also shooting my short film this way because of my imagination sequences. I explain in more detail in this blog. Also at the end where the travel happened, i got this idea from my reception theory blog about how you can repeat camera angle but change than slightly to wow my audience.

Shoot 1 Interview – Location Test Shots

From the research, i did on Location Spotting i needed to see if this location was suitable.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

So I new that this location was going to turn out extremely well. I even asked one of my actors if i could frame up some test shot so that i have a rough idea on what my shot list will look like. So I now need to create a Location Recce. Know i need to create a shot list and then work on a call sheet ext…

Treatment

TITLE: The Re-Run Accounting Job

TARGET AUDIENCE: – As for the gender it will be Male and Female. This is because my short film will cater to them as it isn’t targeted at a certain man or woman. The age rang is young adults and above. This is because anyone that is younger will not get the jokes or the story behind the short film. My target audience will be the type of people that enjoy watching movies and the stories behind them.

I did some primary research on what people like about the Action and Comedy genre and i found out a lot of useful information about my target audience. They like gore but not over the top like the saw movies, the colours must also be cinematic. I am going to be using this in my imaginations as this will be related to the action genre. I also found out how many jokes there should be and how the joke is told. This is telling me that i mustn’t have joke being told all the way through the short film as this can get annoying to watch. They also want the jokes to be realistic so that people can relate to them more. I will do this when the imagination scenes cut back to the interview room. I can have awkward silence and drag it out because we can all relate to being in an awkward interview.

SUMMARY OF RESEARCH:

I have learn’t meany things. Firstly, that during this processes i needed to create my effects and find out what i can do in post production. The reason why i am doing this first is that i must know what effects i can do in Post before creating the question. If i come up with the questions first it is going to be a lot harder thinking of effects to add to that. So I am doing it affect first then question. Doing things this way round was tricky but crucial to my short film as it will make things easier in the long run.

Secondly, I have learnt that all short films have a unique purpose that they tell through there story. The purposes in my short film is that the interviewee is going back in time and re visiting the interview so he can answer the questions the correct way so he can get the job. Through the interview you’re going to be wonder what is going on but it will make sense right at the end.

YOUR PRODUCT:

(The interviewee is going to walk into the interview room laughing and grinning. This will put the thought in your head why is he laughing?. Fast forward to the end of the short film).

The interviewee answers the last question and the dream sequence is going to be really violent and realistic. the interviewer is obviously going to be shocked because he wasn’t expecting an answer like that. Then the short film will cut to the first few seconds of the short film where he is walking into the interviewer’s room laughing. As if he has been going back in time and trying to answer the questions to impress the interviewee so he can get the job. He could also use something that he physically used to go back in time like a watch. (The question and then the following imagination sequence will happen 4 times with different questions and imaginations each time. Once the interviewer clicks into what he is actually thinking about and saying the interviewee will go back in time. Thus creating a loop. This is why i was four shadowing right at the start of the interviewee laughing) I will have the same shot from the start and place it right at the end so that the viewer will definitely no that this is an infinite loop.

PROPS/RESOURCES/EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS/LOCATIONS/CAST

Office Prop – Computer/Laptop, desk props, background props ext…

DSLR and behind the scenes cam,

Costumes – Office outfits

Other Props: Pizza box, toy gun, documents

OUTLINED PROJECT SCHEDULE

All of the interview shots must be shot on the same day. (This is because i must have all of the individual shots slimier as this will make more sense when the ending drops).

For the imagination sequences, it will be the same thing. However, I can film the sequences on different days as long as I don’t spit one sequence on two different days.

BUDGET

Free

Splitting my project in half

Once i started planning my interview then released that if i film the short film in order (clip to clip) this would make the project extremely difficult; as the imagination sequences are in between each question. This is because i would need to book equipment actors and locations several times.

In order to make my life a little easier i am going to shoot the interview and the imagination sequences separately. So that hopefully I can book the equipment actors and locations only twice. Having my production and planning this way made me realize this is what big movie companies do like paramount, dream works and Marvel. Marvel directors said this to the BBC “One of the most important things we learned is that when you’re shooting two of the largest movies ever made, and you’re shooting them back to back… is don’t shoot ’em back to back,” Anthony told BBC News, confirming the duo’s departure. Marvel film the entire film with each actor so that they spend less money having multiple actors on set not doing anything.

With this in mind i am going to split my two areas into two section/shoots because having this work flow means that my actors don’t need to do that much work meaning they will perform at there peak without falling at all. Also it will be less stressful for me organizing multiple shoot days. Whilst in post it will also be easier because i will be able to organize all my clips into different folders and not get confused with multiple SD cards and not knowing where to put clips. They will all be organized and ready to be cut and edited with effect ext… I will also be able to have very few big editing sessions instead of having lots of small sessions, which works well for me as i like editing in big sessions.

I now need to create a treatment as i am at 100% with my idea and i know what i need to do in the planning stages i just need to execute them now.
