It’s interesting to me because someone says ”Needs to have matching colours all the way through” They are saying that the colours aren’t the same throughout the short film. This was intentional as i wanted the audience to know that this is a flashback or imagination sequence and it is not happening now in the story.

However, someone else says ”I really like how you changed the colour theme in and out of the real world and the imagination world” I think there are mixed reviews about the why i decided to change the colours in each scene. I know now that in the future i need to make things more obvious, i sound have added sound effects to let the audience now that this is in the past so that people don’t get confused.

I can now write my final evaluation on my FMP.

Shoot 3, 4 and 5 Effects – Explained

When creating this effects i also looked back on my Losses Blog where is talk about how i can create an interesting bullet whole effect. I used this knowledge with the Shaun of the Dead blog to create a whole in a person effect. I aslo made the action sequences look over the top and not realist. I explain this more in my reception theory blog. This was to make the audience wonder weather or not the action sequences where real or fake.

Shoot 1 Interview – Feedback

Some one said t was boring at the start ”Was boring at the start but soon picked up in the end” I think once he sees the imagination sequences implemented into the short film he wouldn’t find it boring a this added more to the story and it will make it more interesting.

Week 4 and 5 Blog Reflection

Codes and Conventions

Discussion

When doing research on the Action genre it is heavily based on the main protagonist. However, because my short film is going to be a comedy action film I am going to have two main characters.

On the other hand, the comedy genre is going to be heavily focused on when in my short film. In my research on this, I found out about the locations, camera work, sound and lighting. Firstly I am going to make sure that the locations I am filming it, it is going to be bright because having a comedy that is realistic makes the short film funnier. Secondly the camera work is a big part in the production. I need to have shots that are simple and very basic, because then the film will look like has been filmed by a child. the sound is a big part in the comedy genre because diegetic sound like dialogue will be clear to make sure people laugh. Non diegetic sound is also impotent, edited sound can be used to place emphasis on certain scenes. I could definitely add sounds into my short film that do both. Lighting is also a big part in the production as it leads into the camera work. I need bright and happy colours as they are used to show that the scene is happy, or shoot in the day light at the peak time. For example i could have a car exploding but have the colours look realistic and bright as possible. The explosion represents the action genre and the bright colours represents the comedy genre.

Script Research (eBook)

There where lots of tips in this research to make my script planning and creating a lot easier and better to understand. Firstly i must write the scenes that most interest me first and then work a script around that. This is because if I can make a few really good scenes scattered around the short film this is what makes movies from good to great.

Secondly mind mapping. You might this that this is obvious but the way they show you how to be this in the book makes mind mapping a lot more useful. He puts his most interesting/importance scenes as subheadings then uses arrows to navigate the order of them and works a story to join them all together. All people work differently as some people prefer to come up with a story first. However, I am creating a short film so the most interesting scenes must be golden for this to be a hit.

Finally two more useful tips I learned where Step Outlines and Character Overviews. Step Outlines are a basic description on what is going on onscreen. this is handy because i don’t have to remember what is going on i just need to look at this sheet. Character overviews are an overview on all the characters in your film. This is useful for your actors to act out there character because they will be able to now what there personality is like and how they are feeling at that time. I then have an example of how a script should be laid out and how it is presented on the page. This is to help prevent confusion when an actor is reading it.

Other eBooks

Face to Face

From my codes and conventions research i wanted to do some more research on the comedy and action genre to see if I could get any information on the acting side of things. This book ‘Face to Face’ has helped me to understand how to use factual expressions, as this is going to be the main sours of comedy through my short film in the interview segment. I can use this information because when a certain action happens it will effect peoples emotions and factual expressions. This will be useful to me as there are going to be some scenes where characters must react to them in a certain way.

Mythologies of Violence

With this research I am going to have my main character (the interviewee) as male as this is common in action movies. This is also going to be portrayed in my imagination shots.

However, because this is a comedy I am not going to having a strong powerful male protagonist in my short film. This is because my short film is a comedy action. Having a small scrawny main character but make him do cool things like in the stereotypical Action films. This will also make the Comedy side of my short film shine with the Action genre.

I am also going to have the imagination scenes look really realistic because i want things to be as over the top and cool as possible. Also, this will help the comedy side of the short film because it will all look out of place and it will feel like a fantasy, which is what we want. I now need to write an overview of my idea so I don’t get lost with all this new information i need to put into my short film. so i am going to go back to my recent blogs get all the new ideas i have come up with and add them to my idea, in a new blog.

Week 3 Reflection + Developed idea

So far I have developed my idea to a basic level with some detail. I am going to be creating an Action and Comedy short film that is going to be heavily based on visuals to make the viewers laugh. I also know that i must have 4 to 5 imagination sequences as this should fill up the 5-minute time frame. With this, i must have a different reaction from the interviewer.

In my short film, there are going to be the two main characters, The Interviewer and The Interviewee. The Interviewer is going to be quite grumpy and lazy. The Interviewee is going to be nervous but pleased to be there. Also, he wants to impress The Interviewer by giving him the best answers he possibly can think of. While he does this his mind will drift off to think of what he is going to say. as the imagination sequence in happaning, he is going to be telling the interviewer what he is thinking about. However, there is going to be a time-travelling aspect right at the end so it makes the audience think that these things he was imagining could have been real.

The two main characters are going to have very different personalities. The interviewer is going to be grumpy and has a lazy attitude. The interviewee is going to be happy and enthusiastic. I found this out because in my rush hour blog having two characters that clash can make it really easy and funny to make jokes up. So I must now do some research on how my characters should react to each other and how i can make the short film imagination scenes look like there are in an action scene.

This is where i am so far with my idea… Its all well and good having a basic idea down but i don’t know how to get my actors to act. I now need t do some research on facial expressions so i no how to direct my actors. this will also help me when developing my Codes and Conventions research about the Comedy genre. This is because i need to get this step right as facial expressions or what makes comedy nowadays.

Reflection on Blogs

Losses – Playlist

In my Losses Blog I’ve watched to the muzzle flashes tutorial made by Ryan Conley (a professional filmmaker) and he walks through the VFX used throughout his short film. I have written a basic instructions guide so that when it comes to the post-production i won’t need any help with the effects. This is because in my project there is going to be a scene evolving guns being fired. Knowing this research It will be easy for me to implement the effects in post-production because I will reflect back to this blog.

Questionnaire

I did some primary research on what people like about the Action and Comedy genre and i found out a lot of useful information about my target audience. They like gore but not over the top like the saw movies, the colours must also be cinematic. I am going to be using this in my imaginations as this will be related to the action genre. I also found out how many jokes there should be and how the joke is told. This is telling me that i mustn’t have joke being told all the way through the short film as this can get annoying to watch. They also want the jokes to be realistic so that people can relate to them more. I will do this when the imagination scenes cut back to the interview room. I can have awkward silence and drag it out because we can all relate to being in an awkward interview.

Rush hour doc

From my questionnaire research, I had a look at the Rush Hour film and doc because this is exactly what my audience likes. I did some research, watched the film again and watch the documentary on how they made the film. I found out that in comedy’s it’s useful to have two characters that are completely different. This is because the two personalities can bounce off each other. So I am going to make my two main characters react in a realistic and funny way by having a boring character and an enthusiastic character.

I now need to have a look at some Codes and Conventions for Action and Comedy. I just need to get an idea of what it is and how it works. Then learn about how to write scripts because i haven’t created a short film that as dialogue yet throughout out all my years of learning media.
